My Week in Comedy: Jan 14th - 21st
It has been a great week so I figured I would share with all three of you what I’ve been up to.
Saturday: I did the wonderful Porkchop Comedy show in Conshohocken, PA. I got to hang out with a bunch of comics I don’t get to see that often. Including the always irreverent Jim Grammond. If you like tumblr, you’ll love his tumblr. It was a great crowd and they really enjoyed all of the acts.
Here’s a snippet of that set:
Monday: I got to hang out with my friend Alex Grubard for the first time in about a month. We talked about comedy across the eastern seaboard and new jokes. Then he ate some weird smelling food. It was good to see him back with his new silly goatee. Then we went to some mics.
From the lovely mind of Dave Terruso.
Tuesday: I felt a little under the weather so I went and hung out at helium. Then went to NoChe for their fabulous Tuesday open mic. Sat down on the stage and told my mustache jokes in the weirdest way possible. All in all a pretty good, easy night.
Wednesday: I woke up feeling better. So I went to another mic. This was the final night of the Level Room open mic. No one knew it was the last night, but it sure as fuck felt like it anyway. I roasted the room with a bunch of insults, called a bunch of people rude names and then lost my gloves. But I did watch Dead/Alive again. So there is always that.
Thursday: I went all the way to Phoenixville for a comedy show at PJ Ryan’s Pub. Great room, magnificently active/attentive audience and helpful staff. I was really excited for this show, because Todd Glass mentioned PJ’s on Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast. He also came out of the closet and talked about the pain of hiding himself publicly for 30 plus years has affected him. But I know a plug when I hear one.
After PJ Ryan’s, I rushed back to Philly for a late set at the always lively Raven’s lounge. And I bombed harder than I have in years. I insulted a photographer, threatened to walk off stage twice, and closed my set with this lovely quote:
“Humanity will never make it off this planet. Which means when the sun finally swallows the earth, everything you’ve ever done will mean fucking nothing. Enjoy the drink specials.”
Friday: I had an article written about me on the City Paper’s website. It was nice that someone besides me blogged about me. The interview lasted well over an hour and a half. And i was really surprised by what stayed and what didn’t. Then again I kept yelling “OFF THE RECORD” every five minutes, so I’m glad they posted anything.
Then I performed between bands at the lovely Tin Angel in Old City Philadelphia. I followed a bluegrass band and opened for a Dave Matthews Cover band. The crowd was barely informed comedy was going to happen, and were too amped/drunk to give a shit. It was amazing. Got free drinks and sat in a cold green room for hours, then drove home alone in the snow listening to BBC world service report on women in Malawi being attacked for wearing trousers in public.
You may have noticed I didn’t mention Sunday in my weekly breakdown. Well, I didn’t perform on Sunday. I went out and drank alone, because my girlfriend left me.
